A moisture detection system comprising: (a) a transmitter; and (b) a layered sensor connected to the transmitter, the layered sensor comprising a first conductive layer, a second conductive layer, and a separator layer, wherein (i) the first conductive layer, the second conductive layer, and the separator layer are approximately planar sheets of material, (ii) the separator layer is (A) disposed above the first conductive layer and frictionally contacts the first conductive layer, and (B) disposed below the second conductive layer and frictionally engages the second conductive layer, (iii) the separator layer has an electrical property with a first value in a dry state, (iv) the electrical property changes when moisture is present in the separator layer between the first conductive layer and the second conductive layer, and wherein (v) when the electrical property change reaches a first detection threshold, the transmitter detects the electrical property change and generates a detection signal.
